I use this;

https://www.amazon.co.uk/HYDRA-DIESE...xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Buy the cheapest and add that. Makes it premium without the price

Thanks, but this still hasn't helped me one bit with learning about which fuel company supplies Costco!

There are a limited number of refineries in the country (maybe 6?). Shipping fuel around the country is expensive because it is dangerous and heavy. Consequently refineries tend to supply most retail brands in their locality. So for instance Esso, Texaco, Tesco etc.. around North Lincolnshire will most likely all be supplied from the same refinery on the humber bank. Different brands do, however, demand different additive packs for their fuels - so there will be a difference.

I had an ex Police T5 a long time ago. I used exclusively Shell V-Power. Around North Notts I used to get reliably 22-23mpg. I filled up in London and got 18mpg. I mentioned this to my friend who worked for Shell. He wasn't surprised. He said stations in London were getting lower grade Iranian feedstock, and stations in North Notts higher grade North Sea feedstock. Needless to say it wasn't cheaper in London....

I have a T5 S90 and around town I am lucky to get 25-30 max. On a good motorway run I can get about 45. I expected a little better to be honest.

I have my longest trip since buying coming up so will see how it performs, and try eco mode more. But I don't like how it drops the air con off and coasts (easy to speed even on cruise if you don't notice a slight decline in the road without engine braking).

Before the S90 I had an XC60 T5 on loan for 6 months, and the best I ever got from that was 48 on a long motorway run.

My diesel is delivered by Certas. The brand depends on which depot delivers to me. I recently found out that I do have two accounts with them, which stems from them taking over H W Humphreys in North Wales and O J Williams in the West.

If the Porthmadog depot delivers than it is from the Essar [formerly Shell] refinery at Stanlow. If from the Llandysul depot then it used to come from the Murco [formerly Amoco] refinery at Milford Haven which is now only a storage depot for imported refined fuel.
I now specify that my fuel comes from Stanlow as I believe that it is of a consistent high quality.

Essar Stanlow supplies many big brands and supermarkets with fuel, both petrol and diesel, as well as domestic and industrial deliveries through distributors. As far as their petrol and diesel is concerned, it is all the same [unless you specify a premium of specialist product] with the only difference being the few litres of additive package per road tanker load specific to some brand's premium offerings.

I've just had two new bunded fuel stations delivered, bought through Certas. Not installed them yet but will be more secure than the gravity feed tanks I currently use which are not bunded.
Anyone with a private secure yard can buy these things and bulk buy fuel. Swings and roundabouts as to whether there is a financial advantage to the fuel price but the price you put on convenience is the price of the storage tank amortised over, say, ten years.

Tesco / Sainsbury's for points, but I also have a fuel card for Shell which allows me to fill up for the same price anywhere in the UK, or a 2p a litre premium on the motorway.

Never sure on all this V-Power stuff anyway. It says you get more power, but if you read the small print it says "...compared to 95RON". Well of course you'll get more power with 99RON, but so does all the other 99RON fuel that isn't V-Power.

It says it keeps your engine clean with special detergents....it does up the point of explosion where those detergents will vaporise!!! So it might keep your fuel lines "washed", but does that make a massive difference?

Lastly, Shell says "No guarantees provided" for all of this stuff. Think that says it all.....

So is it worth the many pennies more, or is it just marketing.....

Compare it to Nurofen versus unbranded Ibuprofen. The £5 Nurofen is just the same drug as the 20p per packet supermarket basics tablets. Nurofen just comes with snazzier packaging and more shiny words....and the psychological feeling it will make you better than the cheap brands. Put bog standard fuel in a car and tell the driver it's snazzy fuel, and can almost guarantee they'll say it feels better Everyone wants to believe the extra £5 they spent on fuel does something....right?
