True, but I like having a full tank so there's less air space for atmospheric moisture. The purge cycles of the EVAP system draw in air from the outside.

My long trips are less than 1/2 tank away. I let it go down during the outing but make sure it's full when I park it once home. This goes double when rain is predicted.

Hey, if my aversion to moisture in a fuel system is a throwback to steel tanks (which my '07 has) or is insignificant due to the alcohol in our petrol (alcohol attaches to water molecules and passes it with the petrol) then the joke's on me.

Agree - one of the first things I learned when started trucking in '84 was to always top off the tanks - exactly to stop condensation - as well as drain some fuel from each tanks into a gas container every now and then and check for water.

But hasnt that changed now that the tanks for cars are of a plastic type?

I figure it's an american thing, I did some googling and all the forums I saw discussing it were US posters. more humid air? I dunno..

in literally all the cars I've ever had it's never been an issue, I asked my dad and he went 'huh? not that i've ever heard of' and he's had more different cars than I've had hot dinners

so.. yeah I dunno, must be to do with different climates. or the effect is so negligible it only really applies to very high mileage which older cars (and especially non volvo!) didnt tend to get to anyway

I know our air does contain moisture obviously, before anyone says that..

I have to drain my air line compressor every now and then because we don't want the tank to rust.. and yes a little puddle does form underneath when you pull the plug out, but that's a fairly big tank, 100% air and literally ramming the most possible air in (by design of what it's supposed to do..)

Indeed , condensation in the tank is never a problem with any volvo in UK ... The vent goes through a charcoal filter into the inlet manifold so effectively a sealed system .

Hi all,

I've just purchased a S60 D5 2005 automatic. Driven the car back which was 156 miles and I can only come to the conclusion that the MPG meter is wildly optimistic. It showed at 80 mpg for the journey! Absolutely no way is that believable- do these cars usually over read on such a huge scale? I appreciate that it was a long journey and I'd say average speed was 60 mph. Lovely seats by the way.

Resetting it whilst driving will produce silly figures like that, you need to be stopped so that it can take into account going through the gears from 0mph, which would have dropped the mpg by around half

Yep, hugely optimistic. I filled up yesterday and the display was telling me I'd done 56.1, actual brim to brim calculation was 42.3 - ridiculous.
