Default Resonator box of turbo

Hi, I have an XC70 d5 185 Bhp 2007. I have just had the inlet pipe replaced with new seals. On the invoice it says “Replace inlet pipe - Resinator box of turbo damaged around where hose clamps up” The Volvo mechanic did say he believes it should hold. He said it’s a problem with this model but a pin where it clamps on should hold it??? I do loads of miles and I’m a little bit wary of “should hold”. I don’t even know what a resonator box is, what do you guys reckon I should do? Thanks.

The resonator 'box' is about a foot long dog-leg pipe which has an orange seal at either end secured by jubilee clamps which have ( at least at one end) a small screw which penetrates the clamp and the seal and bites into the plastic of the pipe. Despite this, the seals are notorious on the 185bhp engine for leaking or blowing off entirely. If you look on ebay for 'Volvo resonator pipe' there is an aftermarket solution of a short, cranked section of silicone pipe which is held in place with jubilee clamps. I fitted one about 2 years ago with no issues other than finding it a tad fiddly(because of access) to fit.

Your choice to replace or live in hope - but from my experience they tend to fail at 'inconvenient' times and since they require removing the undertray to even just push back in place its not something you want to be doing at the side of the road.

As per John's post, I replaced mine with the silicone pipe about 10k miles ago (06 v70 185bhp). Called turbo resonator delete. Was recommended by Shem, reputable remapper and customiser, who agrees with John in that they're a common point of failure.

Completely anecdotal, but my mpg went up after replacement.

Thanks both of you for the advice, I will get it replaced ASAP. I’ve got a lot of miles to do at the moment so I need reliability. I’ve noticed that the car can get a bit stutery and occasionally won’t turn over straight away, this did seem to coincide with the air intake problem. Would this cause these problems? Google says they would but I would be more interested in your thoughts. Thanks.

If you've looked up 'boost leak' you will already have seen that a leak can cause a range of running issues - the resonator can be a major source due to the pipe bore and temperamental seals so eliminating it should ( hopefully!)address the symptoms you were getting. I'd suspect the 'pin' has cracked a chunk out of the plastic of the resonator pipe below the jubilee clamp so, if the plastic is now broken or simply fragile due to age, I'd be dubious about the longevity of any 'fix' other than replacement with an aftermarket 'pipe'.

Cheers

Thanks John, I’m getting a proper job done on this, no short cuts!

Were you looking for a 2nd hand resonator box, also has brand new seals. Mine split a seal, I bought new ones, went to fit it then decided to not refit the box so I have it spare.
