Does the factory-fit Satnav deliver?
Does the factory-fit Satnav deliver?
In the flesh, I've never actually seen one. Not surprising really, they must be pretty rare. It was a daft-price option back in the day, and I want one anyway.... because. These came out about the time I had my first Satnav. I must have been out of my mind, I recall paying a mere £450 for the first TomTom. The same thing today is found on eBay for £15. As a mere pauper, if I have it right, we paid a trifling £2300 for the factory item. They are planted where the other option, a fifth speaker sits. I'd imagine you can't have a stock five-speaker set-up and Satnav. Correct? The Tomtom continues to sit nailed to the dash, complete with Traffic updates and er...'safety cameras'... To those that have the real Volvo item, questions please: 1) First generation, are these a bit clunky? 2) When was the last map-update put out? 3) Does the map come via CD or similar? 4) How does it pop-up in use? The appeal for me is that, they're integral to the dash, and it's another lump of shonk to add to the heap. Don't suppose most will ever own the factory-fit, but we like to know this tosh.

In all its pop-up glory, just found the Captain Scarlett action-shot. Seems some of you get rid and plant a modern unit in the space?

If they'd had ABBA record singing the directions they'd probably have sold a lot more...
I have yoda on my tomtom and it doesn't get old but then I'm a geek. You are correct in that the satnav takes the space where the dolby centre speaker would go. You should have more than four speakers, there's one in each door, a pair of tweeters in the dash and some in the boot/parcel shelf. 6.5 inch dynaudio's from C70's will go in the doors and the dynaudio dash tweeters are a straight swap... when combined with an SC901 with custom EQ and the dolby system it sounds bloody good for a 90's setup. By this forum's standards I am probably a young git but I remember having to consult a road atlas and write directions on a bit of paper and taping them to the steering wheel for a long solo trip before satnav's came out...
