Default Screeching noise - not PCV.

Hi All

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this one.

My 09 plate V70 2.5T has a nasty screeching sound, particularly at startup. It then reduces but can be heard if accelerating.

It almost sounds like a drive belt - but it's not. That's been checked by tame mechanic.

It's not the PCV problem. Sounds similar but I had that go a few months ago (I was convinced it was a pulley until mechanic said "watch this" with a grin & removed the filler cap.)

Car drives fine, no oil leaks. 22mpg around town (ouch) and 30++mpg on motorway.

Any ideas folks?

I've just taken a quick video so you can hear what it sounds like - not that clear over the normal engine noise but it's that screechy, whirring noise that you can detect in the background.

I can't hear the video due to speaker problems, but I understand the power steering pump will screech loudly on start up, in a pulsing fashion around once a second, if the reservoir level is too low. Regardless of any steering input. There is a youtube of it but I couldn't find it.

Thanks Ferg, not that unfortunately.

You can also hear it when you put your foot down after bimbling along in traffic for example, it's not just start-up although that seems worse.

Hello

Impossible to diagnose from a distance or via video

Possible culprit could be the freewheel clutch pulley on the alternator. I'd remove the alternator belt to isolate that pulley, then same again with aircon belt.

After that it's mechanics stethoscope time.

Ah-Ha!

Confirmed as exhaust manifold leak. Waiting for gasket & a slot when I can get it in. Fingers crossed that'll be the fix...
