Xc70 buyers guide
Hi all.
I'm normally on the c70 section as I have one of those but am now looking to buy my wife a Volvo XC70. Like the idea of a 4x4 3.2 model. However been reading that there are different versions and some have more issues than others. Is there a buyer's guide for xc70s? Or can any of you steer me in the right direction ? Most reliable engine ? My c70 is a t5 and I've noticed there is a black xc70 t5 for sale on this forum. Common issues ? Things to look out for ? Thanks Simon |

No, they didn't, the t6 —yes.
Worth looking out for an Japanese import, just to avoid the road tax. The balance between the 3.2 and the t6, the t6 would be more of a brute and more of a pleasure to drive. I've not had the chance to drive the n/a 3.2, but with volvo's whiteblock reputation, I'd expect it to be silky smooth but you'd need to rev it to get her to shift. Same situation - import preferably unless you fancy a £350 pa tax. A "d5" also falls into the stupid tax bracket. The 2.4d is essentially the same engine, but less the swirl flaps and detuned. If performance is your thing, it can be mapped to the 185bhp+ the "d5" engines produce. Without the hefty tax bill. See above about windscreen issues. |

Thanks for replying guys.
Definitely a third generation. The T6. I looked at xc90 T6s and the auto gearbox was an issue. Is this the case with xc70s? I want reliability. So which ever engine has the last issue better. Does the 4x4 system cause issues ? Is a V70 more reliable over a xc70? I want an auto so are these box's strong ? My c70 2006 has constant airbag issues where connectors become weak. Do the xc70s suffr from these ? Simon |

I'm paying £340, 2009 model is still? Subject to high emission tax. Absolutely bonkers as my 15mpg Cummins is £280!

The XC90 T6’s chocolate gearbox issues were put to bed circa 2006. The XC70 T6 uses the same gearbox as the D5, and the AWD system is very reliable. Mechanically the V70 and XC70 are identical (except AWD). Both the t6 are 3.2 are very reliable but the 3.2 is likely to be the most reliable as it’s simpler with no turbo. The auto box is reliable - more so if the fluid is changed every 70k or so.

Also think about it’s usage, if it’s constant short trips , shopping, commute etc then petrol is prob best, but if longer journeys are involved, even occasionally, then I would say D5. My 2016 D5 averages about 42-43 mpg (actual) but have had over 51 mpg on a trip down to S.France, I would hate to think what that journey would have cost in a T6. Road tax is £220 I think. But, if you don’t need a D5 then don’t buy one. Mine is Euro 6 as well, so it’s future proofed as much as can be, I saw lots of lovely Euro 5 models, but hung out for the 6, last of the last , it is. I couldn’t see the point of not getting a 6, be worth more selling as well, especially to those London types.
