Hi, sorry if this is an old topic.
I'm having DPF issues in my 2010 s40 2.0d
Have had it cleaned/flushed in the past, mechanic now tells me it's beyond cleaning and needs replaced or removed.
Lack of funds (and value of car) means replacement is out of the question.
will removal cause excessive smoke ?

Not always but you risk a big ass fine if it gets detected, your mechanic might be right but I'd be inclined to attempt a clean again using the higher gear 30 mile drive routine and hope the heat is good enough to burn it all off.

Should you want to fix it as he says with a new dpf I wouldn't, if it's been cleaned before it's also possible they've damaged a sensor or it might not even be the dpf anyway, either way it leaves you in pin the donkey land, sometimes better to just take it on the chin and start again.

I should have mentioned this in my OP, The problem seems to follow a pattern...

(A) - 4-5 days of intermittent warning light (engine system service required message) but no loss of engine power,
(B) - Then limp home mode, (usually rectified by engine off 30 seconds) then restart with full power.
(C) - 4-5 days of no issues, no error messages, full engine power

Then back to (A)

My car does a daily commute, 20 miles each direction, gets up to normal running temperature,
Does this sound like a failing DPF ??
