So the fuel in a brand new filter looks pretty brown. As there is only a pipe from that to the fuel tank i reckon the fuel tank needs cleaning out.

Circumstances alter cases. Alternate phrasing - it depends on how bad it is.

Drain the fuel out the bottom of the tank. If you get a little light sediment then a flush with some mineral spirits might do the trick. If there is a lot of crud, then its best to remove the tank for a more thorough cleaning. The easiest path that does not involve the purchase of a new tank is to see if you can find a radiator repair specialist who also cleans fuel tanks. Not many are willing to do this anymore leaving two other options.

First, clean the tank out as best you can, then:

- a tank cleaner & sealer kit such as https://por15.com/products/fuel-tank-repair-kit

- electrolytic cleaning of the tank (do a google search and you can find numerous descriptions). I would apply tank sealer after electrolytic cleaning

Unless the tank has pin holes cleaning and sealing will usually be successful.

If the fuel system was full of crud, then the rest of the fuel system, the brake system and cooling system are also probably deserving of some attention.

Just to change the subject of fuel :-

I see it has the original style brake servo. Very rare nowadays and valuable but they are prone to failure, due to old stock parts. I don't want to scare you but when they fail you can end up with no brakes 😢 Make sure you have a really good handbrake as backup!!

Latest update. The fuel tank was full of rust and gunk, it was replaced with another clean one and fuel pipe was replaced. Thats the fuel issue sorted, the mechanic has also said that it is running badly as it is running on just cylinders one and three on idle and not all of them through the rev range. Carb float chambers were full of muck so they are being looked at and cleaned out and I'm still waiting to hear the results of a compression test which I'll hopefully find out about tomorrow. Fingers crossed its something simple.

Hello. Fortunately the compression test was good. It was carb related although still not running right. Luckily the wipers, indicators, heater fan and overdrive were easy fixes being fuel related and a loose lead. Back to a mechanic to get it set up properly but I'm getting there.
