Potentially stupid question.
Are the steering racks the same for V70 and XC70? Or P2 platform in general. I have a 2001 V70 T5 steering rack that's good. Can I slap it into my 2004 XC70 D5 Euro 3 that's got a leaking one?

From what I've read the racks aren't even all the same just from one V70 to another, people have a hell of a time sourcing correct replacements
just a guess but from 2001 to 2004 I would assume there's a decent chance there was a change of type fitted, and that's not even considering the difference from V to XC I'm not sure if anyone's done a conclusive guide but certainly do as much as you can to check part numbers, types of pipe connectors, inner and outer track rod ends, overall width etc before committing to dropping subframes |

Oh man, really?
I've got matching part numbers. I just don't want the car down for a few days waiting on a refurbishment and banging this one in is, well, cheap.

well that sounds like a good start..
sorry to be doom and gloom monger lol I've just read too many threads about people trying to find the right one, and ending up getting the old one refurbed just check, check and check again before comitting and finding yourself with a car in bits and having the wrong part that's all |

Stuarts right on the money with his first post.
Ignore the volvo part nos . They don`t help . Go by physical appearance and measurement. Make sure the pinion shaft connection is the same . Is it Speed Sensitive or not . Threaded pipe unions or Push-fit . Measure the length across the inner tie-rods and the total length across the outer tie-rods once you have the rack out . Make a note of these . You should be able to swap between the old and new rack to achieve these measurements (assuming all the bits are serviceable ) . Make sure the rack shaft is centred when you install . This is such a minefield that i bought a breaker rack and re-furbished it myself in case i should ever need one . |

This is why I have the opportunity to refurb this one. I can't have the car on a ramp whilst waiting for a refurb to be done on the one that's on there.
I was hoping it was a straightforward swap, this puts me back into sell the car territory tbh. I have little enthusiasm for doing the job myself as well. Thanks for the heads up. I may just walk away now.

It's Winter, it's cold and you don't have the luxury (space) to let a car or 2 set.
FYI: When this has come up, pictures show easily discernible differences. If your 2001 isn't roadworthy and you cannibalize the rack, you'd junk the rest of the car anyway, correct? ....or do you have space for a parts car? |

I have zero space for the parts car, let alone parts.
I've made a decision to move it on. It's one of those jobs that getting it on a ramp to swap over is fine but anything more than a day I just can't accommodate, sadly. I can't take a chance with so many differences.
