ES Overdrive Question
Hi.
In this month's Octane magazine there's a feature on a 72 ES from Volvo UK's heritage collection and in their road test the mag say "you flick a column stalk for overdrive in third and top" Was that the case, with the later cars, OD on the 2 top gears? Would it be possible to enable that feature on a 71 E? Thanks. David. |

OD on top only. There have been cars, the Triumph TR3 being one of them, had this, but the Volvos with OD have never had this option. Motoring journalists typically copy/paste a lot of their text and so these errors get perpetuated.

You can 'enable' that feature on a 71 E by bypassing the switch on the gearbox which only activates the wiring circuit for the overdrive when you go into 4th gear. You then have overdrive available in all forward gears but it is a silly thing to do because there is no performance or driving benefit and if you leave it 'on' when you select reverse (and sooner or later you will) it will muller the overdrive very quickly.
