Once you have cracked it screw it out until it comes loose and any remaining oil should drain directly back to the sump. You will get a certain amount of oil when you remove the cartridge/filter so have a couple of rags to hand. It's all very straight forward when you've done it once.

Some folks over tighten these so to ease removal you could try spray a little penetrant (WD40), between the cartridge and housing, the night before removal.

Refitting - clean the cartridge threads and be sure to replace the O-ring that is supplied with the new filter.

Thanks. It is very similar to the oil filter on my 1953 PV444, but that had a drain plug as well. Ain't progress grand.

No there is no need to do that. I loosen it a few turns before sump draining to help with the flow
