That's a symptom of a clutch drag problem . I assume it goes in nicely with the engine off...

That's also a symptom of the reverse stop bracket at the foot of the gearstick needing adjusting. |

New bushes to take out the slop
The worst ones tend to be the two at the bottom https://www.classicswede.org/shop/ge...r-linkage-bush and you can also change the ball seat ones https://www.classicswede.org/shop/ge...ll-socket-seat Once the bushes are done you can set the reverse stop Unless you know the oil has been changed recently then it is worth changing it. ATF type F or use a modern oil https://www.classicswede.org/shop/re...mtl-75w-80-gl4 avoid detron ATF Also worth making sure the clutch slave cylinder rod is adjusted correctly |

I was intending to post about something similar. When the last big service was done the gearbox oil was changed. The mechanic queried the type of oil draining out so checked with Volvo dealer, consequently it should now have the correct oil, assuming dealer gave the right information. The gear change is quite tight now in first and second but only in cold weather. Other gears are more or less 'fingertip' whatever the temperature. Is it possible that the wrong oil was used after all? The garage trusted Volvo but you never know!

I find the advice on correct oil confusing.
My Haynes manual says the M45, M46 and M47 should use ATF type F or G, (or Volvo Thermo oil part no. 1 161 243-9) but " from 1982 only for the M46". It's not therefore clear exactly what the M47 after 1982 should use - presumably the standard oil for the M40 and M41, ie "Hypoid gear oil SAE 80W/90 or 80/90. to API-GL-4, or Duckhams Hypoid 80". Advice from the expert at Opie Oils in 2015 offered a selection of suitable oils, all basically 75W/90. (https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=231677) Brickboard opinion seems to favour GL4 gearbox oil at 75-80W, but NOT GL5. |

For the M47 box my two manuals are quite clear in stating the oil:~
As you say M47 should use ATF type F or G. My '88 240 has been on this for years and is correct for the car- unusual I suppose when compared with other, but the manufacturer knows the requirements so why deviate. Worth noting previous correspondence regarding oil level etc. The correct oil is available and will probably be "F" the supplying company previously recommended is also the one I use since being in short trousers! Regards Bob. |
