More Questions
Hi all, got a few questions for you...
I've got a 1989 2.3 240, - Under heavy acceleration in 1st and 2nd, there is alot of sideways movement in the gearstick. I'm guessing the gearbox mount is worn/too soft. Is there just one mount on the gearbox, the one visable from underneath? (Square chunk of rubber) Is this likely to cause movement in the gearstick/box and where can the mount be obtained from? - I have a knocking noise from the front passenger side wheel. I've replaced the stabilser link including the two rubber bushes and its had a new ball joint. The damper seems to be in good condition, no oil leaks. I'm thinking the wishbone bush is worn, what are the options? Complete new wishbone, or can new bushes be obtained? and are you able to press them in at home? - How do you adjust the handbrake? - Finally, What is the sort of price I should be expecting to get for my 240? Ive done alot of work on it, cambelt, Waterpump, Rear dampers, pads all round, leads, plugs etc.. Its done 150k, MOT till Apr 08, tax till end of Nov. Its in quite good condition with good tyres, Just came back from a 3000 mile round trip and runs better now than it did before I left. Many Thanks, Dan Last edited by Pob83; Sep 8th, 2007 at 19:50. |

Hi,
Likely you can get the mounts from a dealer, PFV GSF but get new ones. Dealer prices may not be as bad as you think so check first. You might also want to check your engine mounts too as engine movement will result in gearbox movement. Price? £400 to £800? Maybe. Depends on the weather, sun spots and the fickle buyer. Des. . .

Hi. I remember when I first joined Hampshire Police. 240 2.3 Saloons were used as Area Cars. Of course they were 'hammered' but VERY well maintained. I remember the gearlevers moving sideways quite violently when the cars were under heavy acceleration in 1st or 2nd. At that time I assumed it was 'normal' under those conditions?
As for the handbrake, remove the rear ashtray & the plastic bit behind it. Once removed you will see a nut - turn it to adjust the handbrake.

You can replace the wishbone bushes at home if you have a large vice and different sized sockets. I t also sounds as if the gearbox and engine mounts are past it. All straight forward jobs and worth the effort.

If The Right hand mount is broken the whole engine will lift up when you accellerate away and the cam cover will hit the clutch master cylinder . This is more noticable with the 2.3 due to the extra torque .

I wouldn't have though you could do that with a vice and I wouldn't attempt it anyway...

You need a vice that has 6" jaws as a minimum. It needs to be strong and when it goes tight a tap on the vice with a big hammer helps. It needs to be a good quality one and there is an underlying risk of breaking it. I must have done about a hundred this way but would recommend a hydraulic press.
