Default Tailgate won’t open.

1990, 245. Unlocked the old boy today but tailgate didn’t. I tried to unlock it with the key but it wouldn’t turn unless I pressed the button. Then the button remained down but still didn’t unlock!
The interior handle was as inoperable.

Help please!🤔

Hi Andrew,

Not a good start to your day, but perhaps as a first step, squirt a bit of lubricant through the keyhole and see if that makes any difference.

Hopefully some of the other users on here, may have had a similar situation and have some suggestions.

Odd that interior handle wont move though.....

Cheers
Steve

Ah yes, whenever something doesn't work, we all seem to automatically think the worst has happened...... and glad to hear a simple fix worked, for now.....

Might be worth checking eBay for a spare mechanism though in the meantime, my 'just in case' shelf is getting fuller every week

Cheers

If you have a spare anything, it never gives trouble.

When I sold my lorries in the early 90s, the untouched spares mountain was massive! All waiting, never needed!😁

I had a similar thing happened on my 240 tailgate; turned out it was part of the rubber seal around the outside had come loose and was 'runking up' (to use a local term) which put outward pressure on the tailgate once it was closed- i had to push down on the tailgate when unlocking manually to get it to open. In the end i had to renew the seal all the way round.. but it still occasionally happens (the new seal seems to swell when wet??) so i guess its not just the seal.. regular lube really seems to help..
