Well, I certainly was not "spilling" petrol all over the place but it sure as hell felt like I was!!! My average fuel consumption for the event was 8.8mpg ......well at least it has improved after the car's recent remap because at the Marham track day last April it was 8.2mpg!!! So there you go, proof, if any were needed, that ECU upgrades do improve your fuel consumption!!!

8.8mpg.. thats pretty good. I get 3.1mpg if I put a little throttle on my V50 T5 when the engine is still cold. I am sure if I put more gas pedal pressure it will go below 3mpg. Don't want to try and see it. will have nightmares after that.

cheers

Both the Z4 and Alpina average around 7-9mpg on the track - which appears to be pretty much what everyone else gets!

In context I drove from London to the Ring, 16 laps at the Ring + some excitable Autobahn driving - and the Z4 returned an average of 23.5mpg - now remember that includes the 300 mile trip from Calais!!

Now that, ... I am impressed. There is no way my V50T5 will return anything close to your figure for a similar trip. It would be well below 20. Used to run BMW's before and I must say, they have always been good. A V-8 3.5cc used to return the same figures as my T5. Shocking or what!!

cheers

The BMW engines are hugely impressive - but the Z4 is helped by being only 1300KG, and having what is effectively an overdrive 6th - 28mph per 1000rpm. It makes it very economical on a long run - having nudged 40mpg on a speed limit run.

I used to have a T5 and that was just brilliant on the German autobahns - only really running out of puff north of 140mph.

I really like the performance of my 760 even if the economy is pathetic

So like I always say,.. the older volvos are the ones to own. I used to drive an E39 535i before and although similar in bhp to my V50 T5, the pulling was more smoother and the rate of fuel consumption was better. It always impressed me how easy it was to hit good figures for mpg by just going light throttle. Something I try desperately on my V50 and the figures don't improve that much at all, unless I bring the speed down to about 60mph. I could cruise on the 535i at 80mph and still not be shocked when glancing over at the average mpg display.

If I don't get nice older volvo one day, I am definately going to get back to BMW's. What engine Z4 are you using? Is it fun on a track day?

cheers.

I do get told off for talking Bavarian on here. The Z4 is a 3.0 - remapped to 250BHP (on a dyno) and also features an uprated exhaust. It was great on track - but an excursion into the kitty litter has seen me buy and start work on an E36 Alpina B2.5 - basically a 325 with a few extra - IE uprated cams, LSD, remap. The Alpina is bonkers on the track thanks in part to a front BBK, cup tyres and no rear interior.

The Alpina has just passed it's MOT but is still in the garage undergoing important maintenance and preventative work - and possibly upgrade depending on budget!
