Just to put this out here, but ive had a thought, may be stupid so bear with me. On Saturday we went to Tesco, first time out in a while in the Volvo, when we started to come home the car simply wouldn't start, it would turn over fine, and all that, I took the leads out and found cylinder 2 ,3 and some of 4 a full quarter full of oil, straight from the back of my plainly leaking oil cap, why I hadn't noticed is beyond me, anyhow I cleaned up the mess best I could and the car worked absolutely fine on the drive home and much to my surprise has suddenly stoped juddering as I originally described, could a lack of power from a low down misfire caused the power steering the struggle maybe or is this just a daft idea.
Oh and Ive also replaced the very brittle and leaky cap seal ![]()

A few thoughts:
First time out, and the skip isn't there. Well the original post mentioned snow on the ground, so the absence of a skip now the weather is warmer tends to bear out the Ackermann geometry theory. Skipping as a natural consequence of the steering geometry is more pronounced when the tyres are very cold because the tyre walls don't flex as easily. Oil in the spark plug recesses. Absolutely from the filler cap, however, it may not necessarily be down solely to a tired seal. Oil is pushed up out of the cap when the PCV system is blocked, and the crankcase pressure builds. Replace the seal of course, but also do the PCV test with the dipstick to see if there's a positive pressure. Take the dipstick out, put the finger of a rubber glove over the dipstick orifice, run the engine, and if the glove finger inflates then you have a positive crankcase pressure. If so, you might want to think about a PCV service. Or possibly the oil is just the result of a spill when the oil was last topped up! Cheers Jack |

The PCV was redone by the previous owner and does not have any signs of blowing fumes from the dipstick, the cap seal was as brittle as card board and has not leaked since, ive found the black cover does just that, covers, ive done about 100 mile since and its dry as a bone now. As for the knocking, the snow may have caused it but has not appeared since....
