Default oil pump pressure release vlve

Having broken own on Monday with oil light on the dash and seemingly too much oil in the engine,my mechanics first thought was that the oil pump had gone. Spoke to him today and he's read up that there is a pressure release valve that could have not reopened when oil was drained out. Any knowledgeable folks have any thoughts on this?

I think what he means is; the pressure relief valve is part of the pump and if the spring has broken or something has jammed it open then the pump is just pumping oil back into the sump and not round the oil galleries.
If a wrong oilfilter without a bypass valve is fitted then a clogged oil filter will cause a similar effect as the oil will not flow through the filter and the pressure relief valve will open and return the oil to the sump.
Hope this throws some light on the fault.

Sounds plausible. The oil filter was in bad state when it came out and there was about 1/2 litre too much oil in. Is it easy to release the pressure valve?

There is also the oil pressure sensor that could have failed. This is screwed into the block on the front of the engine between the dipstick and started motor. It has a single electrical connector and sends a signal to the dashboard. Replacement is a simple screw out/ screw in operation.

would that cause loss of oil pressure? He's tried to hand crank the engine to test it and can't get any oil up....

No, it would not cause LOSS of oil pressure, only stop any indication of loss.

Pressure release valve broke! Managed to get an oil pump from breakers which was fitted today and just been called to say that my car is running and doesn't seem to have suffered any damage!

In the meantime i've had to buy a car to get my tools to work so now hve a Mondeo estate and V70. Now which one to keep.......... Mondeo is newer and 60k less on the clock. Do love me Volvo though
