Shouldn't do if it's used as a diesel is designed - run at temperature for longer journeys.

Will do if driven how it's not designed for - short journeys around town and never really getting a good run.

My commute is about 40 miles each way and half of that is at 70mph so I’m assuming those 20 mile motorway runs should be enough for it (will also have some longer 100 mile plus ones but maybe only once a month)

Yes that would be fine.

Mine does 8 miles "motorway" (actually 70mph A road) followed by 12 miles cross country each day, then longer runs twice a week and very long runs once or twice a month - no issues with it. My wife's last 3 diesels only do 5000-6000 a year BUT we have no issues with any of them because no journey is less than 8 miles ever - advantage of living in a village 8 miles from the nearest town

It seems the problem is caused by school run type use.

Mine will have some short school run type journeys so only a few miles which I know isn’t ideal but hopefully wouldn’t cause problems given it would then get a longer run every few days

It's the ones that never leave town that clog right up.

Really common with Range Rover Evoques for example, as the target customer often doesn't go beyond the school gates and back via the hairdressers.
