Thinking of a change to Volvo from a long time owner of VAG cars . I currently have 150ps tdi Octavia which I like and haven't had any problems.
Having been the passenger of a friends XC40 several times lately I do fancy one. I would be looking at a used 150 bhp + diesel. Trim not decided, 20-40k mileage. Having no experience with the Volvo brand I am all ears as to what to look for when purchasing a XC 40, Like whats the auto box like and any problems with DPF's. DSG g/box and DPf,s throw up niggly faults on VAG vehicles. Any help and recommendations would be appreciated. Regards |

I'd just buy from a Volvo dealer with a Selekt used warranty for genuine peace of mind.
I don't think Volvos are any more or less reliable than Skodas in the age and price bracket that you are considering. I moved to a used Volvo after years of Skodas and Audis (We still have a late model Yeti), and my impression from this site is that it's either the higher mileage cars that have EGR issues etc (like most makes do as they get carbon issues) or it the later EVs with various issues. I think a diesel XC40 is going to be as reliable as an Octavia diesel. Famous last words. On the gearbox front, one thing that the Polestar dealer engine remaps do is also improve the gearchange, which might be worth considering ? It was worth doing on my V60. |

Volvo 7-speed DCT is a wet-clutch system (unlike VAG DSG..), so no issues with premature clutch wear. The gearboxes have been in use for a number of years on Geely products and last few years on Volvo. I was reluctant at first but ended up buying a car with it and I love it.
Don’t be shy to consider a petrol mild hybrid as well. I switched from a D5 PP to B4 petrol - the torque is comparable to diesels (300Nm on B4), fuel consumption is better (by about 10% in extra-urban and even better in urban driving..), and the refinement is second to none. Plus no DPF/AdBlue to worry about.
