The manual was not exactly helpful

Coolant with corrosion inhibitor mixed with
water, see packaging. The thermostat starts
opening at: 90 ºC in petrol engines and at
82 ºC in diesel engines.
I was also under the impression Volvo engines used the blue/green coolant, but the engines that Volvo bought in/ shared from Renault, VW and Mitsubishi may well use a different coolant., ask your local dealer!

Hope it helps

Mine is a "Ford based" Volvo and I have a feeling it was a Ford spec coolant.
I looked into it years ago and decided to keep to the same coolant, red/pink. Funny feeling I got the "type" from the Haynes manual. I am home on Friday and will check the bottle I used.
I don't suppose it really matters what you use but there are some that won't mix,not compatible with each other, so if you do change over you will probably be best to do a few flushes with water first

Hi,

Its a D5 so Volvo I presume. The Haynes manual gives the same list of oils/fluids specs as the manual but for coolant just says Consult Dealer.

My local dealer isn't all that local and I wouldn't trust a word they say on previous experience but the local indy just said red mixes with red, blue with blue, green with green unless its ancient.

We are coming into our busy season work wise and she who must be obeyed says its a job we could do without just now, she's right so I think I'll flush it in the New Year when I do a service and get the correct coolant with the service kit from one of the online dealers but top it with some red from the indy now.

just change to the genuine volvo coolant its well worth the £40 for the peace of mind knowing your engine is protected for several years and its an easy diy job.
