Default Testing fuel pump relay with multimeter

Just had the situation where the car starts but cuts out after a few seconds. Realised I wasn't getting any noise from the fuel pump. So I took out relay 103 bypassed it with a lead between 87 & 15. The car started and ran ok. What I would like to know is how I can test the faulty relay with a multimeter. I don't know which pin does what, so its difficult to follow tests I've seen on youtube as the numbers are different on the Volvo relay. Any advice greatly appreciated, also can anybody recommend a suitable replacement for the relay other than oe as the Volvo ones are very expensive.Or is it not worth the risk?

hi if bridging the terminals works the pump and engine starts and revs up ok then relay is faulty and yes they come and go and sometimes just shaking it hard can jog it into life but it will fail again, new from caffyns was £53 not long ago, pattern part around the £40 mark so to me its worth the extra few quid for peace of mind.good luck

I've replaced it with one from a donor car and it works fine, but I will get a new to keep in the glove box. I checked on ebay & Caffyns were quoting £60 and out of stock. So need another source really.
