D4 VEA EGR…. what we now know….
Life is too short to stuff a mushroom or trawl through over 2600 posts on this subject.
Could anyone sum up what we now know? I spend three days using various toxins trying to unblock mine with no result. I can live with my engine light being on all the time because of the EGR code but eventually it may cover up something more serious. Thanks |

I have been reading up on a chemical called DMSO, have 500ml arriving in a day or 2. It dissolves organic compounds like nothing else, use very carefully and observe all precautions before opening. Goggles and gloves are a must and rinse any skin contact immediately. Will ruin paint and certain plastics.
Videos online show glazed pistons and rings spotlessly clean after a soak in pure DMSO. Relatively cheap, 500ml around £20. I will be performing an engine flush with a 5% solution in 10/40w oil followed by 2 more flushes just oil, using the method mentioned here. https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/...reply_top_post Volvo forum in Poland have reported excellent results on the VEA engine, drastically reducing oil consumption. Will post update after flush. |

Hi,
Wondering if you ever got round to doing this? I am about to try out on my wife's high mileage XC60 to address high oil consumption |

Finally got round to flushing engine with BDSO.
I've attached 3 pictures, first 2 are with the BDSO mixed with cheap oil and the 3rd after second flush of just cheap oil. Considering the oil with BDSO was only in for an hour at tickover I'm quite pleased with the result. The second flush after 30 mins of tickover with occasional gentle revving was relatively clean so didn't bother with a third, will be performing another oil change after 300 miles to remove any remnants of BDSO. The engine is running quieter and feels perkier (Although that could be my imagination). I have Vida so will check oil level every 500 miles and will post update in a month or so. The oil was off eBay, 20L semi synthetic for flush was just over £40, 20L 0w20 was £80, 1L BDS0 off eBay £21, 4 oil filters off eBay £20, aluminium crush washer x 10 £3. Completed the final oil change 300 miles after the initial BDSO treatment, didn't burn any oil in the interim, and would have expected a couple of mm to have gone.
Will monitor oil consumption every 1000 miles and post results. I had been burning oil at a rate of 0.5l per 1000 miles so looks promising. Going onto winter tyres today so will not bother with mpg figures. |
