you're right. just been looking in the usual "mumsie" places - plus which? magazine, which shamefully doesn't promote rearward facing beyond toddling yrs. it just points out rearward for as long as possible and based on the car seats they advise that's to about 18 months.

Darbs,
a year and a half after your post, I'm reading it and have just bought a Joie Stages for our 9-month-old. It's secured with the seatbelt and can be rear facing from newborn (it has a removable 'cradle') up to 18kg / 4yrs, and then forward-facing up to 25kg / 7yrs.
But you've maybe already found what you were looking for..
