Just spoke to an indie specialist and he said he thought they were plug and play on a 2011, but I'm open to any information.

OK. So I contacted the seller of the 'spiral cable clock spring squib' as described on ebay. He asked what fault codes I have, I told him, and he's replied
'these errors has (sic) nothing to do with clock spring. please check if the steering angle sensor is faulty or not' The error codes I have (translated from Portuguese) are- 000F steering angle sensor internal error 0109 ABS communication with component (SAS) internal error detected direction angle sensor LWS 2.1 0008 steering angle sensor So. Can anyone throw any light? Any thoughts welcome. |

Clock spring & st angle sensor (i think from memory.. are all the same piece) i have some pictures somewhere..but suspect its the same part on similar models of volvo, i think you were on the right track with the SAS as the fault codes appear to be with that.. Im wondering if perhaps some connection is broken with wiring that goes up to the SAS module ie power or a data signal to ABS (BCM?) that means the sensor isnt being found perhaps, rather than it not reporting valid movement s of the steering.. well thats my guess anyways... incase of any use !, i think theres a thread on the start of this forum with all fault codes, but i have found sometimes these dont align with generic ones perhaps? but the description is the key..
Added some pics, would be worth cleaning the pins on the `connector pins, and maybe seeing where the wiring loom takes these wires incase something has got worn thru or damaged... switch cleaner or alcohol on a cotton bud is ideal for cleaning pins.. Been thinking about this, and also your reply Thassos. Please, correct me if I am wrong.
Having changed the sensor yesterday, I am aware that, although there are controls on the steering wheel for cruise control, stereo/phone and also satnav inputs (at least 12 separate buttons) plus four wires to the airbag, the only hardwired interface between the wheel and the car are FOUR wires from the SAS. Or am I missing something? I am racking my brain here (it's late, dark, and i'm in my house not near the car) and I can't remember any other connections-oh, I forgot the horn... So, either there's some huge multiplug somewhere that I never noticed, or all those controls from the wheel are sent down four wires...is that correct? Tomorrow I'm going to put the original sas back on so will check what i am saying |

Right. For anyone still with any interest in this soap opera, the latest and perhaps final episode.
First, I have to fess up. I was a complete idiot. Having been looking at and attempting to buy an SAS for the last whatever it is, at no point did I realise, whether the item was referred to as a 'steering angle sensor' or a 'spiral cable clock spring squib', or both, that it wouldn't necessarily come with the angle sensor as part of the unit. So what did I buy? Yep, the clock spring without the angle sensor. Didn't even notice. Kind of explains why it didn't work, as there wasn't actually one fitted to the car.... So. Followed a link from another thread showing a Finnish(?) guy dismantling an angle sensor, so I started taking mine apart, being extremely careful to not lose position, until I could blow air around the internals, and squirt some contact cleaner inside. Reassembled, refitted, warning went away and after two short trips has stayed away....fingers crossed, hands clasped in prayer emojis... Now just have to see if I can get my money back.... |
