I've only driven the car for about 10 miles, and the engine and transmission seemed to be OK. I haven't tried the night test though. ( open the bonnet in the pitch black of night, and look for a corona effect on the coild distributor and leads). When the distributor was stolen, the HT lead to the coil was rippped off, and the connector broken, hence my idea of changing the leads. The coil looks old and dirty, and my nostalgic memory led me to believe it would be cheap to replace. Reality has hit me, so I will be taking the advice in this thread. I was going to clean up the replacement distributor using brake cleaner ( as suggested in several YouTube videos). However, I read one post somewhere that a guy had done this, and his distributor emulated an EV and ignited when he started the vehicle. So I'm about as likely to try this, as I am to buy an EV.

Just to confirm, if the original coil is still working, leave it be! It's so unusual for them to fail i don't think i've ever heard of one failing on a 7/9xx.
As for leads, Bougicord - don't mess about trying to save a few quid on cheaper stuff, it WILL fail, even good names like Bosch, NGK etc. Don't use brake or carb cleaner on your dizzy as you're likely to do an Arthur Brown one-hit wonder! If you really want to clean it, use switch cleaner/IPA/iso-propyl alcohol and allow it to fully drain and dry (preferably overnight somewhere warm) before refitting. Most of this advice is already in this thread, i'm simply adding it by way of another vote/confirmation of it.
