Default Police V70 - No start

This is just a note in case it helps others.

Yesterday, my V70 suddenly wouldn't start after a day of normal operation.

Just a click from the solenoid. Both myself and the AA guy diagnosed a faulty starter, we did a tow start and I drove it home where it stopped and refused to start again.

Bought and fitted a new starter motor to find nothing changed, still clicking and no start.

Further digging showed the battery fuse had blown (Note to self: there are two fuses, you need to check them both). Bypassed the fuse and immediate start.

However ... an Amp clamp on the battery lead gave me readings of between 170 and 205 Amps and 15.1 volts. This is an ex-Police V70 with a 180A alternator, but doesn't sound right, so I'm assuming the regulator is gone and was probably the reason for the blown fuse in the first place.

New alternator on order tomorrow, so I'll see how it goes. However the fuse fix is a bit of a bugger, Volvo supplies a replacement fuse on a cable which is spliced in, but it's the think end of £120 which is ridiculous.

What I don't understand is on EWD the fuse is 150A. Even with the smaller alternator of 150A, that doesn't sound right. Hmmmm...

I would guess even with all the police kit fitted when it was in service it would never see anywhere near 150amp continuous current.
