Default Series 1 XC90 T5 2.5 petrol

Hi,
Thinking of getting an automatic one of these.
Are they reliable or do they have gearbox problems like the T6 2.9 litres?
Anything else to watch out for with these engines?
Thanks
Peter

As a whole the xc90 isn’t going to be a reliable car. However if you do some of the work yourself they can be relatively easy to live with and maintain. The 2.9 is the only engine that came with the 4 speed GM box so unless you go for that you don’t need worry so much. That 4 speed was a if not when it explodes and it’s a shame as the engine is mega. That being said the 5 speed on the xc90 (2.5t and d5) is pretty good but not perfect, keep it serviced with oil changes and people make them last to 300k. The 2.5t engine is a peach and overall very reliable. Cambelts are easy to change, pcv systems can need some looking after. Look for the general engine stuff no real gotchas.

Said who? I've had mine for over six years (and a Gen1 D5 XC90 before that) and it has never, never failed to start nor to get me home again. Except once, when I left the lights on for a day. Neither gearbox ever missed a beat.

Sure, they are older vehicles now and will have commensurate wear and tear. Parts have and will continue to wear out on them. However, the biggest issue really is failure to service and maintain them properly, which tends to come home to roost eventually.

To suggest that they are inherently and/or disproportionately unreliable for a car of their vintage isn't an accurate conclusion, imho.

My advise would be to go for the best maintained example you can find, regardless of model (except of course, the T6, which was a poor joke). Plenty of decent service history (evidence based) and absence of signs of abuse and neglect. I would say that's your best chance of having few(er) issues during your period of ownership.

2.5T petrol engined XC90 is the one to have now that ULEZ is coming to all major cities. The engine and gearbox are excellent and with the correct maintenance they will last for many years to come. Finding one might be a bit of a task as there are not a lot around

the 2.5T / auto box xc90 is The one i would go for (and prob will) if/when it gets to replace the V50 time

If you find one with a LPG conversion , same checks on the LPG system as on the petrol side, , sure they are cheaper per mile than petrol, but can cost almost as much when go wrong
