Turbo replacement estimated labour
Hi all,
So the trusty old v70 is critically ill. One of the turbos is leaking oil (internally and externally) I've got a good pair of turbos arriving tomorrow, and being fitted on Wednesday. My question is does anybody have a rough idea of labour time to fit them? The garage isn't 100% sure. Thanks Paul. |

Some garages base their charges upon how long the mechanic was actually doing the job. So let's say the mechanic was doing it for 5 hours, but the computer says it should take 7 (purely as an example), they charge you for 5 hours. Some places just charge based on what the book time is, even if the mechanic finishes sooner. So if the computer says 7 hours, even if the repair is complete before that, its still 7 hours that you pay. It depends where you go really, but charging book time even when the job is done is standard practice. You have no way of knowing unless you were physically there watching them do it, which is unlikely. A garage will always cover their costs... this is how they do it. Dealerships do the same thing. If you want a rough guess, I'd say 4-5 hours for turbo replacement.

Thanks for your reply,
He looked on autodata, or similar and it gave a time of 7hrs but he wasn't sure if that was the time for one or both turbos. He's now talking about potentially dropping the engine to get to them, to be fair it looks like a b###ard job as they are so tight to the bulkhead. |

Make sure you get a price for what it would cost without dropping the engine and what it would be with the engine removed. There's labour to removing an engine too, so make sure that's the cheaper option. He could be lining his own pocket. To be honest, it doesn't sound like he knows what he's doing anyway. I don't think he has much Volvo experience. I'd be inclined to bring it elsewhere - Ideally a Volvo specialist.

Horton Cars is an hour or so away from Hemel, and worth a call.
