Volvo on call service required warning on dash usually indicates VCM back up battery is low and require replacing, eye watering price for a replacement. Dealer quotes over £200 to replace.

Where is the VCM located in XC60, wondering if in passenger footwell near the PSIM box?
If that's the case and get to stage where my backup batteries require replacing they can also fish out the PSIM box that fell into the abyss when they changed the fuse for high pressure fuel pump on a recall!

In the event of a complete power failure (say after an accident) the car reverts to using the backup system for SOS contact. The backup system includes secondary batteries, microphone, speaker and antenna that are all independent of their primary counterparts.

Not sure if this thread is indicative, but I have exactly the same problem so it seems like it's becoming a relatively common failure mode. €1700 quoted by the main dealer to replace the unit. It sounds, from this thread, like there is no alternative to a main dealer replacement unfortunately.
I just bought the car from an independent dealer so could be a battle pending to get them to cover it under their warranty... |

The battery replacement did not solve my problem, so they contacted Volvo for a fix and I had to take it back, on picking car up I was informed that Volvo have just released a software update for this problem which was carried out and problem sorted, they said a lot of people have reported this issue lately. So if anyone has this service required issue ask their dealer about this software update.
