V70 because the V50 is a Ford focus basically with a powershift ford auto gearbox, the V70 is a proper VOLVO

Grey area. Depends on the era of V70 we're talking about. P2 chassis V70's were true Volvo. P3 chassis are Ford based. So if you buy a later model P3 onwards, its not a "true" Volvo either.

Also, the V70 has Powershift gearboxes fitted too where none Volvo engines are used, likewise the V50 5 cylinder models had AW (Volvo) boxes.

It probably does, but the V70 P3 still isn't a "true" Volvo. Not like the Volvo's of old anyway. Great cars no doubt, but are they as good as the older "real" ones? I'm not sure.

My dads had several of each V70 from a 850 in 1994, his last being a 2013 XC70, all from new or dealer pre-reg etc. He would say his 2006 XC70 was the best of them.

I’ve had many P2 and P3 cars, my current P3 cars were still produced on Sweden. The P2 cars had there issues as well which I think most forget. The old rose tinted glasses. There’s no doubt the P3 is a much nicer car to own. Yes there are a fair amount of FoMoCo parts on there and the chassis is shared but the main bulk of it is volvo. For me the the P3 cars I have owned have just been as good and certainly nicer to drive and live with but that’s probs an age thing as they are more modern.

Mainly interior build quality and luxury feel - lack of squeaks and rattles, followed by mechanical reliability.

For me I would say that up to the P3 platform each incarnation was a step on from the last in many ways, but on the P3 whilst it was more modern, it was broadly the same, and the FoMoCo build quality isn't as good. It's not something unique to Volvo, I'm sure BMW, Mercedes and VAG owners would be saying cars built from the late 2000's were not as good as their predecessors as it likely wasn't possible to maintain the standards due to cost. And to give you an example of what I mean, when you work on the cars it's immediately obvious - the undertray on P2 models is a fibreglass/plastic molding with sound absorbing material glued on held to the subframe by anodised bolts which screw into captive nuts. On all P3 models, it's a more flimsy fibre sheet held to the subframe by self tapping screws into plastic plugs which are ruined if you overtighten them....

Yes your right there, no dought savings were made and still are made, my neighbour has an XC40, you don’t even get sound insulation anymore under the bonnet…………. The under tray split and had to be replaced as it was flapping about. Probably made from recycled paper.
