OK guys il just state this, I didn't ask for a debate on who was was right or wrong, or what is programmed to what or opinions on anything to do with this, I asked if anyone could help. I found on source from volvo that described how car and key are set to talk to each other and the code to unlock the car system (not the key) is only available from volvo. That is the part that can take 5 hours.... This is needed to tell the car to recognise and accept the key. Hence why keys simply cannot be cloned as easmch key has a unique transponder key.... Annywayyy.....
I think I may be sorted now, a guy local to me sells used keys that have been prepped for re programming, the fact remains to be proven if it can be done, I believe it can..We will see who is right. I will keep you informed.

Thread resurrection, I only have one key for my V60 and my local Volvo dealer have quoted £400. Is there anyway of getting it sorted any cheaper price is new fob, blade cut and programmed. I did say my current one has a blade but they said best to do that as well anyway. I read you can get it cheaper through head office any guidance on this? Can I get a used one and ask Volvo to program that?

Yes a local indie quoted £200, less than half what the Volvo dealer quoted same new Volvo key fob.

Having 2 keys is over rated anyway. I've never lost a car key in my life and the spare just sits in the drawer. I reckon most cars sold with one key happen because previous owners trade them in having just forgotten which drawer the spare was put in years ago when they bought the car.

I have a BMW key which I came across 6 months ago and can't even remember which car it was from.

Although I also have a load of Yale door keys and no idea what they fit either!

I used to think that until I got married. Now 3 keys is barely enough...

Yes I have never lost one either but, have a wife and two children plus it's not a key unfortunately it's an electronic fob, things get spilt, dropped etc. Not in a rush but we tow abroad and want it sorting before then.
