Glad it's not just me then.
I was half expecting someone to say something along the lines of "that's nothing you should have seen ..." Quite the opposite then, oh dear. Problem is I'm not mainland UK; I'm on Ascension Island, about 4000 miles from a decent scrap yard. There are 8 Volvos on the Island to my knowledge, all running, so I can't pilfer an engine. I could get one sent in, but it wouldn't be cheap. If I was in the UK I'd just stick a different engine in. I've got just about all the parts I should need to reasonably repair this engine; so with some luck and some elbow grease I'm going to give it a go. I'll let you know how I get on. |

Thats gross negligence on oil changes and/or cheap oil over many years . As Mike above says the only way is a complete strip down and cleaning of the oil ways , it would be a good idea to use a lot of engine flush first to clean out the internal oil ways before it is stripped down ..

Hi stinky!...that picture looks like a film set from aliens!!....given the situation of your location and the logistics of getting parts..i would definitely have a go at trying to save this engine or at least try to see if it will still run...i have a feeling when its flushed and as clean as can be it will knock a bit when started.....it does look like the wrong oil was used at some point?....anyway it sounds like your in a tight spot where you are and wish you all the best in ressurecting this engine..cheers hj....ps..when it comes time to fire it up..before you put the rocker cover back on..pour oil all around the camshaft bearings...just in case the oil does not make to the head!...it cant hurt?...it almost reminds me of "flight of the pheonix"...i think i spelt that wrong!

thanks for the wishes, I appreciate them.
I bought this car 6 months prior to the chain failing; I had no idea how bad the engine was; it actually ran quite nicely. I was smug though as I bought the car very cheaply (for here) and had been fixing fault after fault quite easily; all were down to neglect; I had no idea how bad the neglect had been; oh well. |
