Howdy Damian! Apologies for the late reply...it's been a very busy few weeks.
All things considered, a decent 340 1.7 is probably the best 300 there is. They're not quite as rugged as a 360, but you get nearly the same performance as a 360, decent fuel economy, and they're a bit simpler on the maintainance front...although arguably they need to be, as they're marginally more likely to go wrong! The 1.4 is also worthy of a mention. Sure, it's slowww (although still faster than most modern 1.4 superminis!), but you get cheap tax, and it's an amazingly torque-happy engine. They really drink fuel if you thrash them, but take it easy cross-country & stick to the limit on the motorway and you'll get 50-odd MPG. They're nice and light (under a ton) for their size, and quite good fun to throw around. There are plenty of slightly scruffy ones around which sound ideal for your purposes - get hunting on eBay Be aware that the drift crowd's obsession with 3dr 1.7s has pushed the price of that particular version right up. cheers James |

I bought my daughter a 1.4 last year for £400 with a years MOT & Tax - no rust and with low miles. She loves it and says that its economical. In fact she is loaning it to me, for a couple of weeks as I need a small hatchback for a while - Im looking forward to picking it up this afternoon - they are more fun to drive than you would think. The are RWD after all!
