Default 850/70 TDI Water Pump & Clutch

HI folks.

Reading an article in my local paper today about buying used V70s tdis and it states that you should change the water pump
at 60,000 miles! I recall a discussion about water pump failures, but how common is it? My 850 tdi is about to reach the 100k and I would like to keep it for a while yet (trade in prices lousy anyway!).

There is a P reg 850tdi estate for sale in my local Auto Trader with 223k miles! Don't know whether the will get the £1995 asking price tho!

Also, anyone had to change a clutch on tdi? At what miles did it need replaced & is it a big job??
Thanks

R.

I don't know what mileage they last till but anything over 100k is normal but clutch jobs are a nightmare , to relpace the clutch I am told by CP Motors (volvo Specialist) it takes 10 hours - that's when you know what your'e doing!!
It depends upon how the car has been driven and whether you tow a heavy trailer or not regularly this will dictate clutch life.
Water pumps can go but according to CP they should be replaced when the belt is changed once you are over 100K, However it is the timing belt tensioner pulley bearings that fail - seize up and shred the timing belt (total engine destruction) - The service interval is 60k for 850 80k V70 but the belt AND TENSIONER must be changed at between 50 + 60k miles to avoid any risk of failure - also only use either Gates or Volvo belts.
Hope this helps

I have a 2000 Tdi which has done 103k. It was dealer seviced till 90k and the belt and tensioner were changed at 80k. Haynes recommends a smaller interval than the official 80k, say 40 or 50k in the Audi A6 manual (which covers the Volvo diesel). I think I'll do mine next at around 120k (hoping it gets to that!). I'll assess the water pump then, but may change it anyway to be on the safe side. Regards.

Mine has done 97k with all belts and tensioners changes early but still on the original water pump.
I am probably going to change it sooner rather than later an re do belts and tensioners again.
The only two real gremlins these cars suffer from are Timing belt tensioners and water pumps - oh I forgot A/C is the other weak link!!
Bit fundamental really - but then what do you expect when a car maker buy's another car makers cast offs!!

Hi All

We have had 3 TDi engine failures this year, 1 water pump sized up at a little under the 100k, striped the belt and snapped the cam into 3 bits, The other 2 were flywheels disintegrating, with the same results,,, £ 4500 final bill

850 & V70 are all 80k change intervals (belt & tensioners) and 40K for the fuelpump

Re clutch,, hard work with out a lift,, 8 hours with one, but saying that, know to a N reg Cd diesel with 250k, original clutch

Regards TJ
