Default Black Smoke on Start Up

Just a quick line. Its just regards to my 2001 V70 T5 with 92k on the clock. On start up first thing in the morning I have noticed that exhaust fumes seem rather dark and the car runs very lumpy for literally the first minute or 2 (although it is rather cold at the moment though). Its the black smoke i am more concerned about. I tend to let her tick over for a couple of minutes before driving off. After a couple of minutes the car i guess gets to a stage where things have warmed up a bit and then i drive off without a hitch and the exhaust fumes are normal. Any ideas????
Fuel consumption is average for this car about 30 or so on a long journey and around 26-27mpg around town. I have her booked in for a routine oil and filter change on next saturday

Hi Terry

A small amount of black smoke is normal, it is just un-burned fuel from where the car runs rich on a cold start up. As for the lumpy idle im not sure?

Kerry

Cool

Some sort of fuel/air temp sensor, maybe giving wrong readings to the ECU causing over fueling on start up.

Someone will know.

I don't think the black smoke is anything to worry about with a cold engine on start-up. I would be more inclined to worry if it was present all the time. As well as other things suggested the air filter may well be worth a look. If it is dirty replace it.

Good Luck Juliobee.
