Default Air Mass Meter Maladies

Hey there

As you are probably aware,Ive spent the last month or so finding may way around my 240 torslanda, i was replacing the drive belts this morning and thought i'd check the condition of the spark plugs, which had black sooty deposits on them, classic rich running symptom right??

Today i also found the diagnostic device in the engine compartment which i thought was pretty thoughtful of volvo to include until it flashed 1 - 2 - 1 at me which Haynes tells me is a faulty air mass meter. I assume that the efi system on my 1993 B200 engine is LH 2.0, i tested between terminals 6 and 7 and got no reading (well actually about 22k ohms!), also no reading between 6 and 12, so faulty/kaputt air mass meter right?

After looking on the forum, it seems that people seem to be getting 30mpg from these cars, which i',m way off (not more than 20mpg at motorway speeds), i have been concerned about fuel comsumption and the spark plug condition would seem to confirm this.

Can anyone give me any advice on replacement of the amm, as ive heard they're a little expensive, has anybody had similar problems and could the faulty meter be the cause of the rich running, and to some extent limited performance?? No fault code flashed for lambda/O2 sensor by the way, so i assume this is ok.

Oh and the other very cold moring, i had to turn the engine for a good while until it started. which as far as i've read is often a faulty amm symptom

Any advice would be really appreciated

Just to let you guys know, i used the Parts Gateway Service on the internet to track down a used air mass meter. A Very good service all round i managed to get one from Salvo near Derby for £70 plus postage within a few days, not cheap but it came with a 90 days warranty and new ones seemed to be at least twice the price.

I fitted the replacement last week and reset the diagnostic box, which now gives me a 1-1-1 'all clear' led output. Since replacement, the old B200 seems much more responsive and fuel consumption seems to have dropped, i'm doing a return run to London in a few weeks time, so i'll let you know how i get on. Next job is probably to fit some Bosch Plus fours to replace the carbon-fouled originals. Has anybody had any experience of using these?

Would suggest stage one is just check lambda functioning ok. Use digital voltmeter and probe into usaully black wire of lambda and on tickover voltage should fluctuate between 0-1 volt blip of throttle should give readings near 1 volt and on lift off should drop to nearer 0 Volt the stablising out at fluctuating 0 - 1 volt. If stays constant at about 0.5 it is dead and needs replacing. O volt is lean 1 volt is rich - if staying very high and not scanning well on 0 - 1 volt would agree is AMM - recon ones are available but why not try breakers for one eg Steve Quinn at Volvo Valley 07963464843.
