Default 480 Headlamp washers (tee peice)

Hi all (again).

The pipe to the headlamp washers tees off to each washer jet through a tee piece which looks to have eiher 2 x one way valves built in, or something like a low pressure stop valve (to stop the syphoning effect emptying the tank, but opens with the pressure of the pump). The tee piece is built with 2 holes in it (for some reason), perhaps to say, allow the water out if the headlamp washer jet was frozen, rather than blowing the pipe off (just a guess).

Water runs out of one of these holes all of the time, emptying the tank.

Does anyone know what the puropse of this part actually is (or can I replace it with a standard tee piece). The correct one from Volvo is 16 pounds plus vat, so it must do something other than be a tee.
Regards,
Keith

I'm a little cofused without seeing the item but I imagine there's a diaphram in that T piece. Maybe a good rinse in hot soapy water might clear any debris that might be preventing proper function? Don't apply pressure or anything sharp as it may do damage.

Hope it works...

Can you post a pic?

Its worth taking your time to remove it!

I used too much force (and ignorance!) on mine and it snapped in two!

Default washer t peice

most of the volvo s with headlamp washers use these they`re there to stop the washer fluid syphoning out through the jets after use. inside is a spring which pushes a felt seal against the input hole but opens when the washers are used however it can end up full of gunge and/or the felt seal fails or jams open. the top of the unit above the two outputs can be prised off releasing the spring and seal for cleaning needless to say, take care, the spring wants to escape onto the garage floor to join its mates hidden under 3 tons of crap. the system does need it or your car will cry its eyes out every where you go but try cleaning in warm water before you give up on it. hope this helps

Hi. I just changed mine after finding a replacement on ebay - Got it for something like £3.99! Now no more empty wiper water bottle.
