V40 timimg belt and tensioner - should I buy OE?
Hi all
Its been a while! Nice to see things up & running again. My 2000 V40 1.8 has 48k miles on it - but its 8yr old now and I'm gonna have the timing belt done. I've seen the appropriate parts on PARTS FOR VOLVO ONLINE. They say on the site... Quote:
PFV prices for the job are: Belt: £19.53 Mechanical Tensioner: £34.85 (made by Ina, who allegedly make the OE ones) Idler: £27.57 (again, made by Ina) Any thoughts?.... John |

I saved €130+ off the dealer price by buying my timing kit from PFS. Same parts in my opinion.
Don't forget the auxiliary/serpentine belt.....if this snaps or slips you can possibly slip a tooth on your cam/timing belt

Yes, as it's 8 years old, I would recomend replacement unless you can prove it has recently been replaced. I believe there were/are problems regarding the tensioner for this belt (located behind/below the powersteering pump). Some people reported a vibration coming from it causing the belt to slip.
If you're doing it yourself make sure it's returning freely and might be a good idea to take it off and get some high temperature grease in there but don't use too much and make sure not to get it on the belt. Good luck...
