Default 1998 volvo 940 lpt diagnostic codes

I recently had my trusty 940 lpt estate converted to a multi point lpg conversion. I have an issue with the ECU warning light coming on about once a week. I want to get the fault code read so that I can sort the issue out. I took the car to an auto electrician who tried to interogate my ECU using a bosh vts system. When he tried to read the code it would not work. Is a dealer my only option? I've seen the code readers for sale on ebay, but I'm dubious that they will work. Anybody have any bright ideas? If I could buy a code reader at a good price I would do it.

Have a look at the above link, which is a thread I started because I had a need to examine the diags on my N reg. 940 SE Turbo estate (boring bit: mine's a HP turbo apparently, but not sure why).

My attempts to find a reader failed, although there was one possibility left not fully explored, which I think might work if you can obtain an OBD2-USB lead and download the free software. However, if you read through my thread there was a link to instructions on how to read the codes without a reader, and I did it successfully using a Digital multimeter.

However (again), my surprise finding was that I can only interrogate codes with the engine running. This is not how it's meant to be, and I can only surmise that Volvo made changes during the period 1995-1998 which are not all well-known.

Good luck, and BTW I would love to know what LPG system you had fitted - I am considering it.

Best wishes

Thanks for the reply. The LPG system I installed is a romano multipoint. In this day and age it's the way to go I reckon. I need to get this EML issue sorted and I think the gas ECU map still needs a bit of tweeking, but I'm still a convert.

OK I built a little diagnostic unit from bits I bought at maplin. However, I must have done something wrong or the pin configuration on my car is different. Has anyone any bright ideas?
