funny this topic shoudl crop up, Jacq was most pleased the other night when watching a chase on police camera action, a red unmarked S70 (either T5 or R) joined in the chase and took the lead, a bit down the line a dark blue T4 joined in, promptly passed all other police cars into a roundabout, nipped round the roundabout as the offending car went the wrong way it looked like, and boxed it in when it lost control at the other side. 1-0 to the 4 cylinder volvo's she did decree lol.

Brakes were defo' upgraded on the T5s, due to the first of the old 850s in Police Spec overheating the discs when 'on a shout'.

Also had a cunning 'by pass' fitted on the ignition so that you could leave the engine running when the key was removed. A couple of Police cars were nicked or 'ransaked' whilst left with the key in at scenes of accidents, engine running to keep the 'blues' functioning for scene protection. Others left the 'blues' going on battery only, then found the battery flat after completion of the job......embarrasing to say the least. The by-pass was a simple push button on the centre console near the handbrake. You held it down whilst the box was in park, then removed the key. Alighted & locked up. Hey-presto, locked car engine running & no flat battery.

No chips.

The old 240s, when used as Area Cars were box-standard mechanically. Only alteration was plastic (vinyl) rear seats & rubber rear 'carpet' (easier to clean when some urk' barfed) UGH!

The brakes are left standard on the s/v40 police cars as they were often fitted with 15in wheels instead of 16's cos wheels where cheaper when they wrecked them

I'm guessing yours was used as a unmarked motorway patrol car been blue
Not necessarily so. most police services have moved away from white cars due to poor re-sale value. blue is now standard in most services essex e.g. the met are silver so it varies.

West yorkshire still use white cars unless there unmarked and there blue, grey or silver

Volvo police cars might be coming a thing of the past soon anyway or at least in west yorkshire as there no longer buying anymore from what i've been told

Grey ones for the most part up in Scotland nowadays, with clear roof lights so they look like a roof rack when not flashing, can be hard to spot even the marked ones in low light coming up behind you...but I digress.

Vectra's seem to being favoured these days, most of the up to date TVfly on the wall's like Road Wars etc have them as the unmarked cars and I've seen marked V6 Turbo Vectra's on patrol around the falkirk area, was sat behind one at lights and could see the number plate recognition stuff doing it's thing as all the oncoming cars came through, quite cool.

With 252 bhp, and 262lb/ft from 1800-4500rpm, putting 0-60 in under 6 secs and 161 flat out, you can see the attraction for the police. Even the old 2.5 V6 SRi Jacq had years ago handled very well, never mind the more modern one with the VRX package for brakes and suspension. Not a vaux fan for years but the recent VXR range I do like.

very true,
mainly due to expense, firstly to buy and of course the running costs. i know my service arent buying aymore volvos, and whilst chatting to the parts guy in my local main dealer (yes i know but i couldnt get the part anywhere else!!) he said that volvo had lost the contract to supply lots of services.

Some have already posted this but most stories about police chipping their cars are myths. Some specialist unit do have modified cars but these are mainly impreza's and evos and even then they are limited to manufacturers upgrades like prodrive as already mentioned. All police cars have the limiter removed and thats it. No suspension mods, just better drivers, no engine mods, just better drivers. Brakes are standard, they need to be for both health and safety as well as funding. Wiring looms aren't different they just add them, speedos are calibrated but need re calibrating every year or they loose calibration so all ex police cars now are probably just like every other older volvo. The reason some police cars seem to sit lower is because of whats in it. Ask a cop to look in the boot, your wife could get less in. If police cars were modified think of the hassle they would have come resale time, after all these are the guys who would inform your insurance company of your mods if not declared!!
