Default Sticking fuel & Temp gauges

Can anyone help?
this has just started to happen! after switching off the engine I found that the fuel & temp gauges 'stick' then after about 5 seconds both gauges return to zero, I mean I can live with it but would like to know what could possibly cause this problem.

Just a thought...only a thought...

On our Scania trucks the gauges start doing weird things when the alternators are about to pack up.

Did you by any chance change the battery recently? If so, did you put in the correct one for the car?

Hi Baffler. no I haven't removed or changed the battery not recently anyway, I removed it about 14 months ago when I found that the earth cable had corroded through.
Some one said that the voltage regulator may be at fault, or could it be the float in the tank playing up?
