Fuel consumption 1.8xs
Hi,
I have a 2000 W reg Volvo V40 1.8XS (Volvo engine not the gdi mitsubishi) it has 95K on the clock with a FSH. Had it now for about 3 months and overall I am delighted with the car. I get an average of around 31 mpg from the Volvo based on around 50/50 split of urban / extra urban driving. My daily commute is 20 miles, half of which is extra urban dual carrigeway. The book says that the Volvo 1.8 should get 34 on average. I've seen stuff about the thermostat etc but mine appears fine. I replaced the air filter, changed the oil (10w/40), cleaned the spark plugs. The tyres and pressures are all good. The only thing I keep in the car is some tools which don't weigh any more than 15kgs. Does 31mpg seem about right or should I be expecting closer to the 34mpg in the book? Grateful for any feedback from other 1.8(non-gdi) v40 owners. Thanks for any replies. |

I've had my 1999 V40 1.8 since new and its now done 130,000 miles.
My fuel consumption has averaged 32mpg since day one and hasn't varied significantly over that time. I do a similar mix of driving to you. Possibly if you never used the air conditioning it might make a small improvement but it sounds like yours is performing fine. |

Thanks for the feedback, I'm please to hear that my 31 mpg is not unusual and in fact it sounds like the going rate for the car. A mate of mine is a big Volvo fan, he reckons that the smoothness of a Volvo is ironed out with fuel. He may have a point but I guess the extra weight and solidness means fuel consumption will never be great. I'm really happy with my V40, it's a pleasure to drive, I gather the newer models do better mpg, but for now I'll take my 31mpg and be happy with my V40.
Cheers. Rob |
