Default Diesel engine output - V40

Hello there,

I'm considering a 2002 diesel V40 as a replacement for a (very elderly) Saab 9000.

I understand that there are two versions of the 1.9 diesel available - 102 & 115 bhp. Can anyone advise me how to tell what the output is for any given car - is it a matter of looking at the engine numbers or V5 or is it possible to tell by looking under the bonnet at the engine configuration / layout?

Any advice mucho appreciated!!

The 102bhp is the old Renault unit and I believe they ran from '96 and finished production in late '00. It may have a TD badge on the rear, some owners removed these.

The 115bhp is the newer common rail diesel and they were introduced around '01 to '04. It will/should have 1.9D on the rear.

Hi Dave,

the 102 and 115 are actually both the newer renault common rail diesel units. I have a 115 which I am very happy with however I'll only get 52mph on a very very good day driving at 60mph everywhere, other people on this forum report the same figures.

The older phase one cars also had a couple of renault diesel engines between 96 and 01 (around 98bhp with TD badges) I believe but I would aim to get a phase 2 model (with the new grille etc). I test drove quite a few and the phase 2 models had lots of improvements including a better chassis and better build quality/reliability overall - I could feel the difference in handling on country roads straight away.

of the two P2 diesels, i think im right in saying that the 115 has a diffferent turbo and map to the 102. the 102 will have a D badge and the 115 will have a 1.9D. you can also confirm this by looking at the VIN - there is a page on this forum that has a breakdown of what all the numbers mean. One will point to a list of engine numbers and the 115 is the one that ends in T3, the 102 ends in T4.

Just found the page!: http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/vin_40.shtml

Hope that helps

Dave
