Default Engine fan runs fast and loud

My 2006 S60 (2.5T) engine fan runs very fast with a whirring sound all the time. One mechanic suggested that the bearings are beginning to wear, creating the loud whirring. Another mechanic told me that the fan has a speed modulator or sensor that controls the speed of the fan. Does it make sense that there is such a sensor? If so, can the sensor be replaced without buying a whole new fan assembly? What else might be causing the fan to run fast and loud?

Yes there is a Sensor, I don't know if it can be replaced seperatly though, It might be worth phoning your dealer about it, I got an entire new fan and controller/sensor free because of a safety recall :P It may apply to your model too - hopefully! good luck.

If it runs all the time ie 24 hours a day then its the fan assembly which houses the controller , If it runs for up to 10 mins or so you may have a fault with the engine managment as this is what controls the fan not a sensor .. sometimes the fan will run on for a while if the engine is extra hot or the weather is ...
