Thanks for the correction - I did indeed mean Drive instead of Park.
That's how the Institute of Advanced Motorists teach on an auto box - leave in Drive with handbrake firmly on when stationary for more than a few seconds. Moving to Neutral and back to Drive causes more box wear. |

Brakes
Hi there,
Hold on there. If the brake system on the 70 is the same as the 60 then the problem may not be in the pads. The hand brake actually manipulates a set of calipers in the disk assembly. I believe the problem may be in the calipers within the rear disks - than in the cable or the disk pads. Good luck. Angelo |

Hi All,
Just a quick post to say I have changed the shoes today and now have a handbrake that works. The old shoes had plenty of material left but they looked polished and discoloured. I suspect the previous owner either had them badly adjusted or put on the handbrake 100 yards before stopping! With moderate pressure on the handbrake it will bring the car to a halt from 15mph even in 'D' (see earlier posts). Many thanks for all the replies. Bob PS. After getting the wrong shoes I went to the Volvo dealer and was suprised to find they were the cheapest at £28 +vat. PPS Agallo thanks for your post but on the V70 the handbrake operates small brake shoes behind the disc. The rear brake caliper is used only for the foot brake. |

It's the recomended Volvo method to bed the shoes in. Agreed it's not something to do frequently (I did it once and the handbrake seems settled and ok).

V70 Handbrake
Hi, Auto or manual your hand brake sound as if it is ineficient. If the hand brake has been used at some time to slow or stop the car, the shoes will be worn and glazed, I would strongly recomend a new set of shoes, persolally I would replace the tension springs and the retaining springs too. I would also recommend that you use genuine Volvo shoes, and also de glaze the inside of the drums.
I have a little horror story to tell about my V70 (2004) The hand brake shoes, broke up ( became un stuck ) this caused the ferodo to bind up and lock the wheel momentarily, this smashed up and mangled the shoes , springs, the expander, and back plate, and worst of all, sheared the stop block off the aluminum bearing housing. The housing and parts left very little change from £600. luckily the cables were ok, but I had to remove the center console to re connect the cables to the equaliser. Good luck Last edited by squelchy; Nov 18th, 2008 at 01:19. Reason: repeated words |

The handbrake when adjusted and in good condition should hold on the second click easily , i would suspect the surface of the drum ( disk) was rusted or glazed that goes for the shoes too . Go down the road at 30 mph and gently pull the handrake up whilst keeping the button pressed , gentle pressure so the shoes do some work , 5 seconds on 10 seconds off , keep 30 mph .. do this a few times . Wait for it to cool , then re adjust cable . it should be vastly better then . If not look at the shoes and drum surface ..

Just an update 2 years on.....
New brake shoes were fitted and after bedding in the handbrake works perfectly. It does hold the car in Drive and on hills. The old shoes were polished and discoloured. Adjusted to hold on the 3rd click. Plenty of adjustment left on the original cables. Bob |
