Default what rear shocks, please

I had to replace the rear self-levelling set-up on my '98 V70. The cost of the same was not for me so I put on ordinary Monroe shocks and the appropriate springs from pfv. Not smart. The shocks seem not to be a good idea (I stupidly didn't ask here first!) as the little bumps and stuff on the roads are not ironed out at all. I'd really appreciate advice on what to do - and suggestions as to what shocks to replace the Monroes with. Thanks in advance!
