Default auto or geartronic?

Looks like i'm about to delve back into volvo ownership. Had a 850 auto t5 cd estate and have missed it ever since i sold it.

I am looking to buy a 2000/01/02 V70 T5 in the next week or 2. My question is do i go full auto or geartronic?

I also have a s80 D5 auto and don't particuarly like the auto gearbox in that but it could be down to the car being bigger and having the 163bhp diesel engine. I'm guessing the auto on a 250bhp petrol will have better pick-up etc.

I quite like the idea of having a little control over my gears but don't really know if the volvo geartronic is the way to go. Not sure it is that good.

So, auto or geartronic? benefits or disadvantages of both in your experiences please.

well first off i reckon its prolly gonna be easier to find a geartronic (more popular)

2nd no point in getting auto as geartronic gives u all the use of an auto box with gears when you want dont think there is much of a comparison really as the geartronic is like auto+ there basically the same

go and have a proper play in both if you can and see what u think as thats what really counts at the end of the day

The Geartronic is the same gearbox , its just a small software tweak to work with the lever + and - switch , its hardly worth the £1200 extra on a new car when you can do a similar job with the standard selector lever .

Thanks clan, so the characteristics of both the auto and geartronic boxes when in auto will be the same? gearing etc.

If you use the standard gear selector in say 3rd what happens when you hit the rev limiter? on the geartronic does it change for you?

Thanks, best not try that then, especially on a test drive. lol.

Also it seems that there are more of the standard autos available on autotrader than geartronic. If i want a geartronic i am very limited at the moment ( only 1 in my price range ATM)

odd when i was looking for mine (admittedly D5) i found it hard to find anything that wernt geartronic

and no ive been caught out a few times putting it in geartronic and forgetting then bouncing it off the limiter

If this is the case, has anyone ever found a way to reverse the + and - action of the gearlever, i.e. to pull the lever back to change up and push forward to change down?

hmm got me interested now ive got a 850 t5 auto how easy and what's involved in changing to the geartronic set-up anything's gotta be better than having no control over the gears.

Surely there is the not so small matter of geartronic being 5 speed and ordinary auto being 4 speed (up until the changeover on the V70 in 1999)? I have never heard of being to adapt the 4 speed auto to geartronic.
