Default Diesel Option Advice

Hi there, can anyone tell me if there are any differences between the 2.4d 163PS engine and the D5 185PS engine other than an increased power output? Is the D5 quieter, more refined, smoother etc? Any assistance in this would be greatly appreciated as I don't know which one to order at the moment!!!

If you look at the RICA website, the 2008 2.4d and D5 can both be tuned to 226hp and 460Nm torque which would indicate the difference is in the electronics rather than the hardware.

Does appear to be an ECU map thing - however couple of things to remember. The D5 will give you better performance from day 1 without a third party remap, secondly Volvo quotes the same economy for both, thirdly the D5 is quoted as having a greater towing capacity - and lastly if you need more power than the D5 ensure that the remap comes with a warranty for any damage that might be done.

So if it was you for the difference of £850 would you stick with the D5 over the 2.4d?

I have a new V70 D5 - and I am getting a HEICO chip in the next couple of months - because it doesn't effect my warranty - but to 210PS and 470nm.

However as standard the D5 is a seriously impressive engine - especially mated to the geartronic box. It pulls brilliantly in all gears - and cross continent dashes are dispatched quickly and comfortably. I am most impressed with the cruise control - at a toll booth - pay the ticket - barrier rises - hit resume on the cruise - it won't redline just upshift at 2500rpm until it gets to the set speed - sitting on the wave of torque.

For £850 I would go for the D5 over the 2.4D

The HEICO upgrade also works on the 2.4d to the same outputs as the D5. The saving between 2.4d and D5 would probably cover the upgrade.
The only question I would have then is regarding the gearbox. Are the two engines geared the same ?

Am I right in thinking that the 2.4d is just the older 163bhp D5 engine and the diff is purely electronic.

So the 2.4d used to be a D5 when 163 was top of the range?

Sort of. The new 2.4D is a EURO4 - the old D5 was a EURO3.
