AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HYDRAULIC SOLENOID UNIT
Hello everyone. I recently had a warning message on my volvo v70 telling me that i had a transmission fault. I was told by a local mechanic that i had to go to a Volvo dealership. A Volvo diagnostic said code TCM 012B logged which relates to a faultwith the automatic transmission hydraulic solenoid unit. This type of fault is only repairable by replacing the solenoid unit. Then they proceeded to give me a HUGE quote to repair it.
Could someone please give me some more information on this problem and if you know anyone who can fix it that would be fantastic. Hope you can help Cheers Jim. |

Jim,
hunt out a local independant gearbox specialist as get their advice. The solenoids are accessable without taking the gearbox out of the car.

I don't necessarily think it should be such a hugely expensive fix. The parts are probably not cheap - and they will be quoting book time to do the job. And probably, no particular insight or intelligence applied to this book time. I'd suggest trying a independent automatic specialist. From memory, there's so accreditation for auto specialists, so look for anything like that. Often, main marque dealerships ship out their automatic issues to automatic specialists, anyway - in the same way they often do for air conditioning. |

Thanks for the responses.
They had quoted me in the region of £1500+vat. The warning message has now gone and my car doesn't feel any different. Should i still get this checked out? No way can i afford Volvos prices though!!! Cheers |

Quite honestly I would leave it alone, you may consider a change of transmission fluid however.
As you have not said what model/engine the car is I can't advise on the fluid you need but be careful on the type as the 5 speed box needs special ATF. |

Thanks for that. Its a V70 on an X plate 2.4 140bhp with 115000miles on the clock. I'll leave it for now and hope nothing else occurs.
Cheers. |

Thanks. I'll try that.
I'm not that mechanically gifted so any ideas on where to get an Haynes manual for the newer shape V70. I can't find one anywhere. Car is also due a service soon so i think i'll get the gearbox oil changed then. |
