More odd noises... gearbox?
Having momentarily considered selling the GLT (madness), I've decided to keep it and get some things sorted.
It has developed this odd noise (noticed it last night for the first time). It only happens (or is audible) when pulling away in 1st gear. To begin with I thought it sounded like water sloshing around behind the dash somewhere, but couldn't get it to happen any other time than pulling away in 1st. So I tried to boot it in 1st instead, and the noise was louder and more pronounced and it sounded more like the noise that fine metal moving parts might make if they are rattling about together.... Anyway, it sounded ominous. Any thoughts? If i get to the bottom of this noise, there's always another to think about... '89 GLT with 120k. |

It might just be something vibrating at that particular frequency. There are lots of bits of plastic, clips, vents, ashtray etc in that area, all making different noises.
Gearlever sleeve, reverse pull-up wire, ball-pivot washers? Clutch release bearing or lever? |

Another one that just occured to me is a tiny gap around the base of the gear lever boot. Just try gently pinching the rubber around the gearlever while driving slowly, and you will be amazed at the whooshing/hissing noise that results.
Moving the gear lever strains the boot in different directions, and the pop-in fasteners do not really make a very airtight seal. |

Thanks, I'll have a look at these things. I just got a full new exhaust yesterday as it happens, but the noise had started the day before, so it's not exhaust related... I can get it to happen if i have the handbrake on and strain the car in 1st agains the brake. Then again, sometimes it doesn't happen at all. It seems to be more noticeable when the car is warm.

Check if the exhaust manifold heat shield is cracked and mispositioned or the metal snorkel pre heat pipe is rubbing against the steering column uj

Hi...I would be interested to know how much you paid for your exhaust fitted..Last week i had a five piece replacement fitted and that did not include rear silencer or tailpipe or manifold to first box pipe..I did not not come away with any change out of eighty quid!!..with regards to your continuing noise i posted a thread recently about a knocking in the area of my gearbox..The general opinions were to just drive the car!!..so i forgot about it and its been fine!!..They do have a tendency to produce all manner of noises and clunks and you can spend your whole life chasing them around the engine bay!...I know the release bearing in the clutch can produce its own distinct sound?...good luck volvodoogie!..keep us posted if you locate it..its always nice to identify another one of the endless list of volvo music!...cheers hj.
